How to cancel TalkTalk

A clear, step-by-step guide to cancelling your TalkTalk broadband, plus the things worth checking before you leave.

Before you cancel

  • You may be in a minimum contract, so leaving early can trigger an early-exit charge. Ask for the exact figure before you agree to anything.
  • Expect to be offered a retention discount or loyalty deal to make you stay. If you're sure you want to cancel, stand your ground.
  • There may be a notice period, so you can be billed for a short while after you ask to leave. Cancel as early as you can.
  • Cancel from the account you actually pay with, and make sure you're the billing owner before you start.
  • Always get your cancellation confirmed in writing and keep it, and return any equipment on time to avoid charges.

How to cancel TalkTalk, step by step

  1. Check your contract end date first so you know if early-termination charges apply.
  2. If you're switching provider, place the order with your new provider, they notify TalkTalk via One Touch Switch, so you don't cancel manually (exception: switching to Virgin or Vodafone on the CityFibre network, contact TalkTalk directly).
  3. If you're not switching, contact TalkTalk to give 30 days' notice, by phone on 0345 172 0088 or via the live chat on the help centre.
  4. You can also write to TalkTalk, Soapworks, Colgate Lane, Salford, M5 3LZ.
  5. Return your TalkTalk equipment within the return window (28 days for standard packages, 42 days for Full Fibre) to avoid charges.

Notice, fees & cooling-off

Notice period
30 days' notice if not switching (billed for that period); if porting/switching, the new provider's switch date applies. 14-20 day cooling-off; 30-day Great Connection Guarantee on new Fibre.
Early-exit charge
Early Termination Charges apply mid-contract - roughly the remaining monthly charges (approx £10.20-£11.25 x months left). Waived for above-contract price rises or unresolved below-minimum speeds. Return equipment within ~28-30 days or be charged.
Cooling-off
14 days from your order date, leave without penalty and pay only for services used.
