Cancellation guide
How to cancel Microsoft 365
A clear, step-by-step guide to cancelling your Microsoft 365 Software, plus the things worth checking before you leave.
Before you cancel
- There's no fixed contract, so you can cancel anytime. Your access simply runs to the end of the period you've paid for.
- Expect to be offered a retention discount or loyalty deal to make you stay. If you're sure you want to cancel, stand your ground.
- There may be a notice period, so you can be billed for a short while after you ask to leave. Cancel as early as you can.
- If you subscribed through Apple, Google or another provider, you must cancel with them, not Microsoft 365 directly.
- Get a confirmation (on-screen or by email) and keep it as proof of the date you cancelled.
How to cancel Microsoft 365, step by step
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365 and sign in with the Microsoft account that bought the subscription.
- Find your Microsoft 365 subscription and select 'Manage' (may show as 'Upgrade or Cancel').
- Select 'Cancel subscription' (or 'Turn off recurring billing' to just stop it renewing).
- Review the cancellation page, then choose 'I don't want my subscription' and confirm.
- If you only see 'Turn on recurring billing', the subscription is already set to expire, so you are done.
Ways to cancel
- Online
- account.microsoft.com
Notice, fees & cooling-off
- Notice period
- Cancel more than 2 days before the billing date to avoid the next charge; access runs to expiry.
- Early-exit charge
- None. Refunds depend on region/timing (e.g. prorated in Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Israel, Korea, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Turkey). Turning off recurring billing alone does NOT refund the current term.
