Cancellation guide

How to cancel BT

A clear, step-by-step guide to cancelling your BT broadband, plus the things worth checking before you leave.

Before you cancel

  • You may be in a minimum contract, so leaving early can trigger an early-exit charge. Ask for the exact figure before you agree to anything.
  • Expect to be offered a retention discount or loyalty deal to make you stay. If you're sure you want to cancel, stand your ground.
  • There may be a notice period, so you can be billed for a short while after you ask to leave. Cancel as early as you can.
  • Cancel from the account you actually pay with, and make sure you're the billing owner before you start.
  • Always get your cancellation confirmed in writing and keep it, and return any equipment on time to avoid charges.

How to cancel BT, step by step

  1. Find your contract end date on the My BT home page or in the My BT app to check whether an early-termination charge applies.
  2. Call BT on 0800 783 1401 (or +44 150 174 7714 from abroad), BT does not offer full cancellation online.
  3. Give at least 30 days' notice; your service stops 30 days after you cancel.
  4. If you are moving to a new provider, they can often manage the switch for you, which handles the cancellation.
  5. Ask BT to confirm your cancellation date and any final charges in writing.
  6. Return your BT Hub / TV box when asked to avoid non-return charges.
