Cancellation guide
How to cancel BT
A clear, step-by-step guide to cancelling your BT broadband, plus the things worth checking before you leave.
Before you cancel
- You may be in a minimum contract, so leaving early can trigger an early-exit charge. Ask for the exact figure before you agree to anything.
- Expect to be offered a retention discount or loyalty deal to make you stay. If you're sure you want to cancel, stand your ground.
- There may be a notice period, so you can be billed for a short while after you ask to leave. Cancel as early as you can.
- Cancel from the account you actually pay with, and make sure you're the billing owner before you start.
- Always get your cancellation confirmed in writing and keep it, and return any equipment on time to avoid charges.
How to cancel BT, step by step
- Find your contract end date on the My BT home page or in the My BT app to check whether an early-termination charge applies.
- Call BT on 0800 783 1401 (or +44 150 174 7714 from abroad), BT does not offer full cancellation online.
- Give at least 30 days' notice; your service stops 30 days after you cancel.
- If you are moving to a new provider, they can often manage the switch for you, which handles the cancellation.
- Ask BT to confirm your cancellation date and any final charges in writing.
- Return your BT Hub / TV box when asked to avoid non-return charges.
